With it being spooky season, there has been a major surge in candy eating, so let’s rank California’s top three most popular candies for the season. The three candies representing California are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Skittles, and M&Ms. Not every Halloween candy can be ranked, but these top three present an excellent selection for the top picks.
It begs the question, why is candy such a staple of Halloween? The trend first started in the 1920s-30s but boomed in the 1950s. According to Max, from the hit movie “Hocus Pocus,” “Everyone here knows that Halloween was invented by the candy companies. It’s a conspiracy.” Seeing this we can see there is some truth to what Max said. In the early 1900s, candy sales were dropping and hitting a low, so companies tried pushing it into Halloween’s culture to improve revenue. This proved to be highly beneficial as now, every Halloween bag is being filled with Liquorice, Sweetarts, and Twix.
After taking a poll from 30 different students at Tech High, the favorites out of these candies has been revealed. After the poll was taken, last place spot was given to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, with a total of eight votes. Some have shared their strong opinion on the matter, such as Wyatt Anderson who believes that “Reese’s Cups are superior to M&Ms in every way.”
In second place, with 10 votes, is Skittles, barely missing its chocolatey counterpart. This next candy got the most overwhelming votes and support which shocks most.
First place belongs to M&M’s with twelve votes, the highest in the poll. Earning it almost twice the amount of votes Resse’s’ got. M&M’s go in popcorn, ice cream, and Halloween bags. It is a staple of the American candy diet, making it deserving of first place.
