March Madness is a basketball tournament played with 68 college teams from both the womens and mens divisions in a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament. March Madness was started in 1939 and the term ‘March Madness’ was first used in a high school association and is now a term used for college basketball. It originally only held an eight team bracket and now, in 2025, it has grown to host 68 teams.
March Madness is one of the biggest sporting events every year. This year, the final four teams will be held in San Antonio, Texas. On Sunday, March 16, Selection Sunday will take place where the brackets will be decided and released. Two days later, on March 18-19 the first four will play off. March 20-21, the first round will be played, the second round will be a day later starting on March 22-23. The ‘Sweet 16,’ also known as the last 16 teams playing, will play off from March 27-28. Then on March 29-30 the ‘Elite Eight’ will play off. Then, in San Antonio at the Alamodome in Texas, the Final Four will play off on April 5. The NCAA championship game will be held three days later on April 7 at the Alamodome Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.

March Madness has the highest quantity of betting individuals out of all other sporting events in the United states. Even though the men’s March Madness bracket is more popular than womans, since 2022 the women’s March Madness has grown more in popularity than ever before. This year, it is expected that people from the United states alone will bet around $2.72 billion for both the men and women’s tournament. That is about double how much was bet on the super bowl in previous years.
