Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ‘Zootopia 2’ released on Nov. 26, 2025, as a sequel to the animated film, ‘Zootopia,’ which was released in 2016. The film was highly anticipated, but Disney never expected it to become a mega-blockbuster, claiming the title of number one animated studio picture of all time. Within the first five days of opening the film produced a record-breaking 559.5 million dollars globally, and has since remained in the top ten at the domestic box office for an astounding 13 weeks.
Actors Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman returned to reprise their roles as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, the main protagonists. The sequel also featured many new characters such as Gary De’Snake, played by Ke Huy Quan, and Cattrick Lynxley, played by Macaulay Culkin. Actress Quinta Brunson, who played a new character Dr. Fuzzbee, even won the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Award for her voice acting. The plot follows officers Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps as they investigate a case involving a mysterious pit viper, Gary De’Snake, and the Lynxley family, who are desperate to cover up secrets about the city’s past. Like many other Disney animated films, ‘Zootopia 2’ is a family comedy, featuring a PG plot of action and adventure along with many humorous moments.
As of late February, the film has a rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Between now and its release date it has also broken many records and earned several awards. The movie became Hollywood’s most successful animated film globally, producing over 1.7 billion dollars in global Box Office revenue and surpassing ‘Frozen 2’ and ‘Inside Out 2’, the original place holders. The animated film won two awards for best animated film, one being presented by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the other from NAACP. As of now, it has won three awards, but has also been nominated for several awards such as the Golden Globe and Annie Awards for best animated motion picture and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and many others. Along with these nominations, the film is in the running for the Critic’s Choice Award.
It’s safe to say that ‘Zootopia 2’ is one of Disney and Hollywood’s greatest successes. It’s a family friendly movie with the perfect balance of adventure, comedy, and mystery. New and returning actors have helped animators to create an award worthy film for all audiences. From shattering records to breaking the box office, the film has proven itself to be a must see movie.
